ROSS CASTLE
Contemporary extension to Ross Castle, a registered monument, used as both a retreat for its owners and a guest house. In the 1960’s the well known Guinness family constructed a single storey extension to the eastern side of the original tower house. Our clients commissioned Hanley Taite to design an extension that would provide for additional reception space and a grand master bedroom. We sought to create a bright airy space that felt connected with the surrounding native woodland, provided glimpses of Lough Sheelin and most importantly respected the existing historically important building. To adhere this we designed the extension to site over the 1960’s addition. The structure comprises glulam trusses and SIPs panels with glazing and dark corrugated metal cladding providing a contrast between the old and new while not appearing to distract from or compromise the historic building.
